 Periodontal (Gum) Disease is a contagious bacterial infection of the gums that is estimated to affect about 80% of Americans. In addition to being the number one cause of tooth loss, recent research has shown that gum disease is a factor in the development of heart disease, diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer’s, and other illnesses.Gum disease is a silent disease, meaning that there may not be any symptoms until it is serious. When there are signs, they include bleeding, puffy or red gums, bad breath, receding gums or loose teeth. Gum Disease is episodic and can flare up from time to time.
At Dr. Neufeld’s Dental Health Center, our gentle Hygienist’s carefully evaluate your condition at every teeth cleaning appointment. They measure areas of inflammation, bone loss, and may do a microscopic slide to evaluate your specific bacteria. If needed, we provide non-surgical gum therapy and may recommend you see your Hygienist more frequently.
